Four styles, 140+ workshops, dancing to 7 AM. Nothing booked yet. Eight weeks to get sharp.
Eighth year running. The biggest SBK weekend in the country.
Salsa, bachata, kizomba and Brazilian zouk, all under one roof at the Hyatt Regency SFO. Workshops from 10 AM, afternoon socials, shows every night, and the floor stays open until roughly 7 in the morning. Artists and DJs fly in from Europe, Asia and Latin America. Three competitions run alongside it.
The man who rated the room is teaching in it. Carlitos and Cece are on the SBK bill with Modern Bachata Fusion and Rides & Counterbalances. He taught the same Rides and Contra Balances workshop in Waikiki, and Modern Bachata Fusion is the exact name of the Season 4 team season running at Phoenix Bachata right now. He has taught both floors, so the 6-8 is a real read.
Pass prices are real, pulled off the Danceplace cart. Hotel and flight are still estimates.
The pass came in 36% over my first guess. I had $220. It is $300.31 once I add the Thursday pre-party, which is sold as its own ticket and is easy to miss. One number is still open: the Hyatt group rate behind block code G-SF22. Hyatt refuses anything that is not a real browser, so that one needs two minutes in Chrome.
Fifteen miles south of the city, four miles from the airport.
1333 Old Bayshore Hwy, Burlingame, CA 94010. Hotel and venue are the same building, so there is no commute once I land. Downtown San Francisco is a 25 to 40 minute drive north, which matters only if I take a day off, and I will not.
Shape is confirmed. Exact times move, so check their sheet before I fly.
Their General Program page points at a live Google Sheet as the source of truth, and it says outright to check that link when in doubt. Times above are the published shape and they will move. General Program
Hawaii worked because of the weeks before it. Same engine, eight more weeks, higher bar.
Four days of straight dancing in Waikiki went fine, and none of that came from the four days. It came from a schedule that was already running every week. The curveballs, the unfamiliar follows, the styles I had not seen before, all of it was survivable because the reps were already banked.
Tuesday goes to Cavallo, every time. Every other night in the week is bachata in some form, and SBK runs four rooms where two of them lean salsa. A 6-8 floor will not carry a weak salsa lead.
Thursday alternates, and the double changes the math. PBD Thursday is two advanced classes back to back, so it is 8:00 to 10:30 against one hour at Cavallo. Take PBD on weeks the routine needs social bachata reps, Cavallo on the weeks salsa has gone quiet. Rebuy the punch card either way, one punch covers this Thursday and then it is gone.
Cece said it outright after reading the brief: every single thing I had a problem with was a timing problem. Fourteen corrections came out of four privates and they all reduce to when something happens, or in what order.
They pressed their rear shoulder into my sternum and had me follow off their movement, then swapped. Enlightening from both sides, and the most portable thing that came out of those four hours. Sternum contact is the channel a follow actually reads in close and half-open, so standing on her side of it tells me how much information I am actually sending. Run it before socials. Costs one song, and it tells me fast whether my prep is early enough.
